Kansas City companies cashing in on Chiefs success

Local businesses are benefiting from the Chiefs playoff success. KMBC 9 found out how Kansas City ad agencies and their clients are cashing in.

Chiefs fever is running high. “Obviously it's big for Kansas City as a whole, because it puts us on a national spotlight,” said Jason Parks, Chief Growth Officer at Barkley, a KC-based advertising agency. It’s a spotlight many local companies are hoping to share.

“It's a real good opportunity for brands to really engage the community,” said Josh Brewster, Vice President of Public Relations at Trozzolo, another KC advertising agency.

Both Barkley and Trozzolo are buzzing with clients wanting a chunk of Chiefs Kingdom. “What they try to do is create custom spots so they show their passion for the Chiefs,” said Parks.

“We're seeing so many of our clients, you know, wanting to be part of the momentum,” said Brewster, “it's a tremendous opportunity to bring added exposure to both the Chiefs as well as their own brands.”

Advertisers know the AFC Championship game will have lots of eyeballs. “Last year the game did a 60 rating, which means 60 percent of the households in the Kansas City market tuned in to watch the Chiefs play the Patriots,” said Parks, “and we expect something like that this year.”

“We've seen them expand their media buys to include the playoff run all the way through to the Super Bowl,” Brewster said of Trozzolo’s clients.

Super Bowl spots are limited, with only 10 percent local ads. “If the Chiefs would make the Super Bowl, it becomes very tight inventory,” said Parks, “so clients are trying to elbow their way in to get ready if that happens.”

No matter what, both agencies are proud to be part of Chiefs Kingdom. “It's a great community building experience for these brands,” said Brewster, “and we're just along for the ride having a lot of fun.”
